Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey – Year II

For the second year in a row, the Press Council of Kosovo will be implementing the UNESCO EU-funded project: “Building Trust in Media in South East Europe and Turkey” funded by European Commission and implemented by UNESCO and its partners.

One objective of this project is to support the press councils in the region and thereby strengthen media ethics and media self-regulation.

Thanks to the support provided through this project in 2016, the Press Council of Kosovo updated its website making it mobile friendly. It also organized a one-day training for its staff to improve the handling of complaints, organized a conference on the financing of the press council, and organized a study visit to the Press Council of Serbia.

For the second year of implementation of the project, the Press Council of Kosovo is planning to review its Statutes with the objective to establish of a Complaint Review Commission, which would be comprised of some of the Press Councils’ members on a yearly rotational basis.

To improve the transparency of its work, the Press Council also foresees to upgrade and update its website with a database of all its members including the online media. This will also include the elaboration of an up to date searchable database of complaints with all elements (the complaint, the proceedings and decisions of the Complaint Commission), minutes of each session of the Complaint Commission, but also instructions for filing complaints, the Journalist’s Code of Ethics, Complaint Commission Rules of Procedures, regular Reports.

Finally, the Press Council will organize in March 2018 a one-day conference to celebrate more than a decade of media self-regulation in Kosovo. This event will be used to organize an online awareness-raising campaign on the main achievements of the press council in the last decade.
